Josh Hamilton will return for the Angels series and Chris Davis was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Hamilton on the roster.
This gives Davis a chance to revamp his swing in the minors and regain some confidence. I think it’s the right move. The club didn’t have much choie at this point. The defense Davis played at first was excellent and it kept them more patient than normal, but you can’t have your first baseman hitting .200. So Davis and Justin Smoak will split time (I would think one will DH when the other is at first) and Hank Blalock becomes the primary first baseman.
Davis wasn’t surprised, as he told Jeff Miller of Inside Corner’s D Magazine:
“It was only a matter of time,” he said. “Obviously, I wasn’t making adjustments. You can’t expect them to keep sticking me out there every day, not really being any kind of a threat at the plate. I’m not down about it. You don’t ever want to be sent down, but at the same time it’s kind of a relief to know I can just go get my head straight and kind of take out all the outside influences away and just go get back to baseball. Give myself a chance to get back to where I need to be.”
